Twenty piles had been cast outside the specified dimensions, leaving them unable to receive the new barrier wall they were built to support. Conventional demolition was not an option — the piles were part of the permanent works, the reinforcement below cut-off level had to survive intact, and impact breaking risked damaging the very structure that needed to remain.
Austral Contractors was engaged by Speedpro Civil to wire saw the twenty piles down to a workable level.
Wire sawing gave a controlled, vibration-free cut through heavily reinforced concrete at a diameter no other method could reach in a single pass. Each pile was cut into sections sized for the crane, lifted clear and removed from the work front. That left Speedpro with clean, accessible pile heads to break back to the correct cut-off level and expose the starter bars for the new barrier wall.
The Eastern Freeway Upgrades — Burke to Tram works form part of the North East Link Program, one of the largest road infrastructure projects in Victoria.
